The Council may not approve of our abundance of karo trees, but the birds are certainly happy with their sweet flowers. Play the recording below for to experience their sounds near Hungerford Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/haewaihoughtonvalley.org\/happenings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Tui-1.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Photo above is by our ex-local bird man, Peter Reese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Are you going to our iconic event: The Great Debate?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This Thursday Houghton Valley Playcentre is holding its 21st &nbsp;annual \u201cThe Great Debate\u201d, a comedy debate between central and local government politicians, and TV and local personalities. This year\u2019s moot is that&nbsp;<em>\u201cIt is easier running the country than being a stay-at-home-parent\u201d<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The fantastic line up of speakers are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>JO RANDERSON (writer, actor)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>TAMATI COFFEY (TV presentor, Labour MP)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ANAHILA KANONGATA\u2019A-SUISUIKI (Labour MP)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>BRIAN DAWSON (Wellington City Councillor)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FLEUR FITZSIMONS (Wellington City Councillor)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DAVE TOWNSEND (local personality)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NICOLA YOUNG (Wellington City Councillor)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>all led by our charming host and MC MP for Rongotai PAUL EAGLE<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There will be nibbles provided, drinks available for purchase at the bar and raffles on the night. Local band&nbsp;<em>The Wooden Box<\/em>&nbsp;will be playing live music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the Playcentre\u2019s big fundraisers for the year, all proceeds go towards our fabulous volunteer-run Playcentre in Houghton Valley.&nbsp;The details are below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Great Debate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thursday 30 August&nbsp;@ The Pines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doors open&nbsp;6.45 pm, debate starts&nbsp;7.30 pm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tickets $25<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Milk delivery update<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Eketahuna Country Milk<\/em>&nbsp;have been really pleased with the response to glass bottle milk deliveries. They are looking to start the market supply in about 6 weeks. Some details:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The milk will be pasteurized;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The milk will be full cream (the old silver top);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It won\u2019t be skimmed initially;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They will look to develop the range in the medium term;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The milk isn\u2019t registered organic but is free from hormones and antibiotics;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The cows are all grass fed and free range;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The herd that the milk comes from is a jersey X herd. They haven\u2019t tested for A2 milk but approximately 80% of the herd are A2.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There is enough demand for them to develop a home delivery system. There will be a delivery charge, yet to be determined but as low as possible, and hopefully as the number of customers increase they will revisit this charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They deliver meat as well at the same time as the milk and they plan to deliver in the early hours of the morning, so you will wake up with your meat and milk at the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Timber for the community gardens<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/haewaihoughtonvalley.org\/happenings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/926b0f06-a5e9-47bb-80b7-595e0b51ebe1-225x300-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-581\" style=\"width:300px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The old telephone pole jarrah timber planks have been delivered and carted in to the community gardens near the school for rebuilding the beds on the lower site (pictured). The new beds will be constructed collaboratively, organically, and in true vernacular style.
